Got a Question?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is acupuncture painful?

Most people experience minimal discomfort during acupuncture treatments at Johns Island Acupuncture. The needles we use are extremely thin—much finer than those used for injections or blood draws—and Treayor’s gentle technique ensures a comfortable experience. Many patients report feeling a slight sensation when the needle reaches the correct depth, which might feel like a brief tingling, warmth, or heaviness. Most find their sessions deeply relaxing, with many patients falling asleep during treatment.

Dao Needling is a different type of Needle, and treatments can be much shorter, or it can be added at the end of a regular treatment to treat an isolated area. The sensation is much stronger when administered since it is primarily used for thick scar tissue relief.

Treatment plans at Johns Island Acupuncture are highly individualized based on your specific condition, its severity, and how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms. For acute conditions like recent injuries or sudden pain, you may experience significant relief in just 1-3 sessions. Chronic conditions that have persisted for months or years typically require a series of 6-10 treatments to achieve lasting results. During your initial consultation, Treayor will evaluate your condition and recommend a treatment plan with a clear timeline and expectations for improvement.

We are out of network, but we can verify your coverage within 48 hours of submission.  We are also covered by the VA.

Your first appointment includes a comprehensive consultation where Treayor will discuss your health history, current symptoms, and treatment goals. This is followed by a physical assessment that may include pulse diagnosis, tongue examination, and evaluation of painful areas—all important diagnostic tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Based on this assessment, Treayor will create a personalized treatment plan and perform your first acupuncture session. The entire first visit typically takes about 75-90 minutes, with follow-up appointments lasting 45-60 minutes. We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing and having a light meal before your appointment.
